May 2023 - MALSP Meeting - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Purview Premium eDiscovery.

SYNOPSIS:

The constant updates to the platform certainly range from great to challenging in Premium eDiscovery. Microsoft has introduced a ton of changes over the past 14 months. Including almost weekly updates since December 2022 with more announced for the near future (see: Improving efficiency of your eDiscovery workflows with Microsoft Purview - Microsoft Community Hub.)

Our discussion will include current licensing, new functionality, naming changes, and how and where organizations are leveraging their investment in M365 to support Discovery. The discussion will be led by Anne Costello from Epiq, with the benefit of a Corporate Legal perspective from Kate Karshna (3M) and Law Firm perspective from Brigid Volk (Greene Espel).

Presenters:

Anne Costello, Sr. Information Governance Consultant, Epiq

Anne Costello is a forward-thinking and insightful technologist with over 30 years of experience supporting technology in litigation practice. Anne has broad and deep experience with many commonly used legal software applications and litigation practice support. She believes that technology is key to the efficient delivery of legal services today and to successfully support a legal practice, a technology leader must endeavor to understand the business and practice strategy of the organization and use that understanding to set the IT direction for the Firm. This is where Anne really shines as she is an expert at keeping lines of communication with Firm leadership open and transparent and by actively monitoring business, practice, and technology trends in the legal market.

Anne joined Epiq in 2021 and is a Senior Information Governance Consultant. At Epiq she provides Microsoft 365 Information Governance consulting, training, and best practices solutions to corporations and government entities.

Kate Karshna, Legal Analyst, 3M

Kate is a Process Analyst within the Litigation team at 3M. She has worked in the industry for over 20 years, moving from vendor, to law firm, to in-house legal department. She is fortunate to work within 3M Legal Affairs on a highly functional team of experienced e-discovery experts who manage a large case load of everything from small employment matters to IP litigation to massive MDL’s.

Kate’s current role focuses on document collection, processing and early case assessment. Her team relies heavily on the expertise and scalability of e-discovery vendors, as well as in-house tools such as Nuix Workstation, Nuix Discover, DISCO and Purview, to ensure the right workflows are applied to every matter, according to size, timeline and budget.

Brigid Volk, Litigation Support Manager, Greene Espel

Brigid serves as Greene Espel’s primary litigation support resource.

With more than 20 years of experience in litigation technology, Brigid advises and assists attorneys and paralegals navigate the e-discovery process from beginning to end while following the guiding principles set forth by the EDRM, the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, and Greene Espel standards, all while controlling costs.

Brigid’s role also includes consulting with case teams in preparation for trial, including preparation of trial exhibits and demonstratives, configuration of courtroom and war room technology, and support for daily in-courtroom presentations.
